The World and Lore of Dragon Eclipse

The History of the World

A long time ago, the world was inhabited by humans, focused on functionality and technology, and fae, an elusive winged people dwelling in hills and mountains, devoted to magic and art. The two nations were too different to trust one another, and besides, there was jealousy. Humans found it hard to accept that the fae were born with the ability to fly. The growing disparity climaxed around one thousand years ago when the fae discovered the sixth element: the dark. As they deemed it necessary to keep the balance of the world, they decided to open portals to the Shadow Realm and obtain more of it. Sadly, the experiments failed, and the moon from the Shadow Realm found its way into our reality, shattering the remains of the border between the worlds. The appearance of yet another moon led to the fateful Dragon Eclipse.

The world received an almost fatal blow. The earth shook and cracked relentlessly, rivers dried, and seas flooded the lands. Lands were invaded by hordes of alien mystlings, and soon, the civilisation was on the brink of its tragic end. Fortunately, the Dragon Guardians came to stop the disaster. Blaming the fae for the cataclysm, they exiled all of them into the Shadow Realm and, in an unbelievable show of power, sealed the portals behind them. The end of mankind was averted. The Dragon Guardians could finally retreat, and the surviving people could rebuild their shattered civilisation. Ten centuries have passed since then, and nobody remembers the fae and their deeds. Content with peace and the protection of the Guardians, people bond with mystlings and together, they build towns, farm the land, and invent technologies.  Little do they know that the fae, trapped in their gloomy, lightless Shadow World, still think of the world they were exiled from. And they dream of returning.

Mysterious mystlings

The world is full of them. Aligned to all six elements, the peculiar creatures called mystlings lead their lives close to people, wrapped up in their own affairs and conflicts. Every now and then, some of them spot a human and find them intriguing enough to make a bond. Such people are called the tamers, and they are responsible for bringing mystlings into society. Each species is equipped with a number of interesting skills, and some tamed mystlings do a great deal of useful work for their communities. Still, they are best known for fighting duels with other mystlings alongside their tamers.

Guardians

There is no greater power than the Dragon Guardians, mighty, godlike creatures that keep the world safe and stable. Few mortals have ever had a chance to see, but nobody doubts their existence, and they are humbly worshipped even in the most remote part of the world. It is said that they have already saved mankind once. One thousand years ago, when the fae opened their portals to the Shadom Realm and caused the balance of the world to collapse, they emerged to save the people from extinction.
Nothing could stop them from completing their task, not even the ultimate sacrifice of the Dragon Guardian of Light, and thanks to their selfless intervention, the world has survived. The Dragon Guardian of Light has mysteriously come back to life, and there are again five of them, each representing one known element of the world: earth, fire, water, air, and light. There is little doubt that should mankind face another lethal threat, the Guardians will come to help.

Elements

The traditional four elements—fire, water, earth, and air—have been joined by two more: light and dark. Every mystling species is defined by one of them, but some are aligned with two. However, some scholars believe that there is yet one more element, but its name and properties have so far only been the subject of speculation.
